Just a quick little blog before going to sleep. Tomorrow’s the last day at the pharmacy, got the inventory done today and it’s coming out pretty dang accurate thank goodness. Going to be a weird day tomorrow, oh well…

Another merchant on the island has succumbed to the lure of charging people to use their debit cards to purchase goods as it was an extra 25 cents getting gas this morning. If they have more than two hundred transactions in a month, then the payment gateway fee drops to almost nothing and they could even make something out of the deal, or someone will. Doesn’t leave a good taste in the mouth for the customer though, think most people would prefer to have such charges included in the price of the goods rather than make an extra line item for their own records.
It’s not that expensive either for debit and credit card payment gateways either. Debit cards are usually charged a flat fee per month, the amount depending on your relationship with the bank and Visa et al take a percentage from each transaction, typically 3%. Not sure if these new types of schemes for payments gives you a smaller monthly bill if you only have a few transactions per month and suspect their flat rate is comparable to others like Moneris

From a web developer point of view I got a chuckle from the bottom of the last page where it say, “These pages were built on “Page Builder,†a part of WEBTV/MSNTV. No computer was involved.†As if! Sounds like M$ marketing wizards were/are selling WebTV as a computer for those out there that don’t like to use computers or don’t know how. Just don’t tell them that there are microprocessors and chips involved, give it a familiar name like TV, and then start charging them for every time they want some content.

First meeting tonight of the new Bowen Island Arts Council Communications Committee, that’s a mouthful! I’ve been creating the electronic file for the Lieben newsletter since coming to the island, with the editing and content supplied by the next-door neighbour up until now. Although we’ve done a great job between the two of us (imho of course!), my lack of artistry shows through in that it’s a rather plain little newsletter. With the added input of more people and now a couple of actual graphic artists on board we should have a nice new look for this seasons’ issues.

It’s a traffic jam out on the water this morning as the Queen Of Capilano had to almost graze Dorman point to avoid a log boom coming south to the Fraser delta. While the log boom stretches out, two trains of Seaspan tugs are heading north, while heading right up the middle and gaining speed is the Langdale ferry. Easily outpaced, the tugs fall behind as the ferry makes a long arc towards the Horseshoe Bay ferry terminal. And one small speedboat snaking it’s way through all of them on it’s way to the mainland.
