Another summer over with Labour Day 2006 drawing to a close. A long dry summer here and elsewhere in the province and N.A.; glad that Dad has a nice cool lake to go to when it gets really warm in the Interior. Thought it would be smart to phone him a day ahead of the long weekend to say a birthday hi, but missed connecting and then again the next day too, glad he likes emails!
Had an interesting time looking around at what was available in the javascript graveyard world for scrolling news ticker type things, and ended up with a nice little 1.3KB script from CJ Web Site Design that did just what I wanted with minimum fuss and maximum accessible web2.0 unobtrusive javascript-y SEO friendly goodness.
Finally getting around to upgrading to Fedora Core5, they release every six months but I’m about a year or so behind which is no big deal as security patches keep coming out for a long time after. Core 4 was a four disc install, this one from scratch is five discs with all the extras and six in total with the rescue CD. One DVD would do it, University of Calgary has a mirror and it’s close so 485KB/sec download times using home cable service made it fairly quick at 25 minute each. It’s time to take, but free operating systems are worth it. Core 4 already has me running with translucent and animated windows without any problems, even grabbed a set of those glowing Vista buttons and icons and ended up keeping the buttons – but that rotating a cube with your desktop very cool and is a lot more do-able with Core 5, fun to try even if I don’t have the processing power at the moment for every day use.
