What’s Next?

“If you are rational, however, these may be some of the last few weeks or months in which to enjoy what is left of our beleaguered, dying republic and way of life.” – the last sentence of an article by Chris Hedges, worrying about what happens next in the Middle East. Chilling words, especially when you consider that he’s been following the path of war since the El Salvador days, was the Middle East bureau chief for the New York Times for a spell and has seen first hand how these things tend to play out.

Meanwhile Lou Dobbs keeps thumping for a revolution of independent voters come November, the middle class has always been a sleeping giant though and awakes when least expected, whether or not it wakes up at a polling station is anyone’s guess. It’s anyone’s guess as to what happens in the next few weeks… The Tyee thinks it has a handle on what this continent may look like in the future but the Toronto Star reported it first.

Meanwhile back on Bowen Island some of our politicians are working at keeping corporatization at bay, we still have a couple councillors that kowtow to business though to keep everyone else on their toes. With only a sprinkle of rain predicted for the weekend, the long warm fall weather continues to amaze everyone while at the same time are worries about what happens it this weather trend that seems to have started in the early 90′s continues, even as more homes are being built on our limited island ecosystem.

We heat the house with only a wood stove in the basement, so have been keeping busy in the afternoons now with splitting and stacking wood for the winter. The old maul has a perfect wedge and works well, but the handle has taken a beating over the years and my swings the other day finally broke it. As luck would have it I was about done splitting the latest load dropped off so no lost time, except that today the chore was drilling out the old bits and handle wedge for a new one and the next load of wood coming this weekend.
