CBC Radio reports this morning with an interview from Whistler and a proposal to house people in shipping containers to alleviate the shortage as a result of the Olympic Games. The Tyee has a review on 100 Years of Homelessness in Vancouver. Matthew Good is playing music and is glad to be able to afford a nice place to live and advocating for others.
Wouldn’t mind a 40′ shipping container myself; cut a whole in the side for a window and another on top for skylight to start. A “normal†door to knock on is preferable, so another hole for a door frame to fit, then along the roof line of the remaining two sides for adjustable vents. Finally, holes to inset electrical and another for plumbing service and the cutting is done except perhaps if a chimney is in the picture.
Line the inside with Tyvek or other suitable vapour barrier and a good thickness of rigid insulation and cover with preferred choice of wall material. No worries about rooms as one eats, sleeps and recreates in the same single room and the washing up and toilet is handled with a motor home style combo unit as is a propane stove and refrigerator. That’s good enough for a single container, but at about $1000 each for used ones why not use a few of them together and create some larger spaces.
