Freecycle on Bowen Island

Friday, February 29th, 2008

There is a new way to get rid of the things you no longer want on Bowen Island, using the web to communicate your desire to be free of some stuff. And if you need something, just ask and there is a good chance that someone on the island already has it and can let it go for free. Yep – everything must go for free, there can be no money or bartering going on. It’s really simple, just a couple clicks and the ability to send and recieve emails or browse the web is all that is needed. The parties that are giving and recieving work out their own pickup so no physical facility is needed, and other than a moderator (me for now) no volunteers either.

Go to the group home page, and click on the Join This Group button if you live on Bowen Island and have a need to lose or gain something:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/bowen-island/

The Bowen Island Freecycleâ„¢ group is open to all who want to “recycle” that special something rather than throw it away. Whether it’s a chair, a fax machine, piano or an old door, feel free to post it. Or maybe you’re looking to acquire something yourself! Nonprofit groups are also welcome to participate too!

One main rule: everything posted must be free. This group is part of The Freecycle Network, a nonprofit organization and a movement of people interested in keeping good stuff out of landfills.

I’m kinda of in the same boat as Scobleizer, in that home base could be just about anywhere. Lucky for me, I already have a gmail account in my name, markgroen@gmail.com so I can sign up for lists and still get the email by appending info to the addy like this: markgroen+my-new-list@gmail.com and other tricks, plenty more plug-ins and widgets available.

Your Camera Has Been Found

A blog I’ve been reading the Post Secret blog for a few years now, and at the bottom of this Sunday’s batch was a youtube video and the interviewer’s voice had a familiar ring to it, sure enough it was CBC radio and “As It Happens” from Feb. 8th. Interesting concept, lost a camera at some point in time?
